Case Study 2

Nankipoo Tower

The Challenge:

To team up with our partners to construct a new radio tower in Nankipoo under one of the outcomes of the State Department of Economic Development’s $250,000 technology grant which was awarded to the Lauderdale Board of Education to expand the awareness and use of technology to the benefit of education, industry and community development across Lauderdale County

This tower would be a backhaul link to Ripley and Dyersburg, and a number of the first subscriber units to be installed in Nankipoo residences. The grant also provides two years of support for a local Nankipoo Internet Community Center that will provide computers and Internet access to Nankipoo area residents along with startup training.

Our Partners:

West Tennessee Communications and ECSIS provided the new wireless services into Nankipoo with financial partner Pinnacle Ventures, LLC of Dyersburg, TN. West Tennessee Communications provided the radio tower, radio backbone services and support, while ECSIS provided the Internet gateway services

The cTechnology Approach:

Along with our partners, our goal of this grant was to extend broadband Internet services to unserved areas of Lauderdale County to reach the homes of K-12 students and teachers with the help of this tower.

Additionally, we were selected by the school board of Lauderdale County to research, design, and implement the technology programs which include Internet access expansion, technology-oriented supplemental curriculum for K-12, technology workforce research & development, and technology entrepreneurialism jumpstart.

The Result:

July 8th marks the day that the first trial customer was connected at Nankipoo!  The Community Center broadband connection is up and service tests show they are getting about 5Mbps to the building.

Thank you USDA Rural Utility Service! Congratulations to Pinnacle Ventures, West Tennessee Communications, and ECS for getting the technology in place and operational across a two-hop backhaul.
